Stone's 'Bugonia' Bites Into Box Office History!

Thescreescore – Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos’s latest collaboration, "Bugonia," is making waves at the box office, setting a new record for the Oscar-nominated director. This darkly comedic remake of the South Korean film "Save the Green Planet!" marks the fourth time Stone and Lanthimos have joined forces, with Stone portraying a woman abducted by a conspiracy theorist convinced she’s an alien.

"Bugonia" hit theaters during Halloween weekend and has already surpassed expectations. According to Deadline, the film is projected to earn $4.4 million domestically in its opening weekend. This figure represents Lanthimos’s biggest wide opening to date, eclipsing his previous record-holder, "Poor Things," which debuted with $2.9 million.

The film currently boasts a domestic total of $5.5 million. However, "Bugonia" still faces a challenge to recoup its $45 million budget, the most substantial investment in a Lanthimos film thus far. His most commercially successful project remains "Poor Things" (2023), which grossed $34 million domestically and $111 million worldwide.

Despite a challenging year for many films at the box office, "Bugonia" could gain momentum as the holiday season approaches. The film has also garnered critical acclaim, earning an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in August, Stone’s performance in "Bugonia" has positioned her as a strong contender for Best Actress at the Oscars. Adding to the buzz, Stone revealed that she was initially "so afraid" to shave her head for the role.

A potential win could make Oscar history for Stone, securing her third Best Actress award, a feat not achieved by any actor since Katharine Hepburn. Hepburn currently holds the record for the most acting Oscar wins with four.

The partnership between Lanthimos and Stone has proven to be a successful one, with several of their films receiving Academy Award nominations and wins. Lanthimos has been nominated twice for Best Director, while Stone won her second Oscar for "Poor Things." "Bugonia" also marks the second collaboration between Lanthimos and Jesse Plemons.

Lanthimos has stated that he will be taking a "little break" from filmmaking, and Stone also doesn’t have any upcoming projects.

"Bugonia" is currently playing in theaters.
