Thescreescore – Prolific creator Taylor Sheridan is officially poised to plunge back into the brutal, morally ambiguous landscape of the Sicario universe, with recent reports confirming he has penned the screenplay for the highly anticipated third installment. This news marks a significant step forward for a franchise renowned for its unflinching portrayal of the drug war, igniting excitement among fans eager to see where Sheridan will take the story next.
The original Sicario, masterfully directed by Denis Villeneuve, famously launched Sheridan’s screenwriting career, a significant pivot after years spent in front of the camera on shows like Sons of Anarchy and Veronica Mars. The 2015 crime thriller garnered critical acclaim, multiple Oscar nominations, and a robust box office performance, cementing its place as a modern classic. Its 2018 sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, shifted focus to Benicio Del Toro’s enigmatic character, Alejandro Gillick, and continued the series’ commercial and critical momentum, paving the way for further development.
A recent report from Variety, initially detailing NBCUniversal’s successful bid to secure Sheridan for film projects beyond his Paramount deal, verified his involvement in Sicario 3. The report explicitly states that the multihyphenate talent has completed scripts for both Paramount’s upcoming Call of Duty adaptation and the long-gestating Sicario 3, potentially titled Sicario: Capos.

The journey to Sicario 3 has been anything but smooth, characterized by a turbulent development period spanning several years. Production faced numerous setbacks, including the widespread industry disruptions caused by the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike and persistent scheduling conflicts among its in-demand cast and crew. While rumors once circulated about Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie’s potential involvement, no further details have emerged to substantiate those claims.
However, the confirmation of a completed script aligns perfectly with recent optimistic updates regarding the threequel. Just this past August, star Josh Brolin informed thescreescore.com that the film was indeed "happening" and teased that production could commence "soon." With the screenplay now finalized, the primary remaining hurdle appears to be coordinating the schedules of its star-studded ensemble, which typically includes Brolin and Del Toro.
Despite his return to scriptwriting duties for Sicario 3, it remains highly improbable that Taylor Sheridan will assume the director’s chair. His current professional slate is exceptionally dense, overseeing an expanding empire of Yellowstone universe series, navigating the post-production phase of his new Tulsa King spinoff, Frisco King, and commencing production on Landman season 3. Furthermore, with Lioness expected to return for a fourth season and The Madison already renewed through season 3, alongside his extensive new deal with Paramount, Sheridan’s directorial calendar is simply too packed to accommodate helming the next chapter of the Sicario saga. Fans will undoubtedly be watching closely to see who steps up to direct Sheridan’s latest dive into the criminal underworld.
