Thescreescore – The veil has been lifted on Mike Flanagan’s highly anticipated The Exorcist: Martyrs, offering a chilling first glimpse into a franchise reborn. Universal Pictures, during its presence at New York City Comic Con 2026, unleashed the inaugural trailer for the horror reboot, confirming a stark departure from previous iterations with a compelling detective-crime narrative at its core. This new vision, penned and directed by Flanagan, promises to plunge audiences into an abyss of ritualistic terror, spearheaded by none other than Scarlett Johansson.
Johansson steps into the shoes of a New York City Police Department homicide detective, whose investigation into a series of macabre ritualistic killings unexpectedly dredges up connections to a haunting case from her past. As the lines between earthly crime and supernatural malevolence blur, she uncovers a far more sinister entity orchestrating both the contemporary atrocities and the echoes of her history. The trailer teases a profoundly dark journey, showcasing unsettling crime scenes adorned with bodies arranged in Satanic ritualistic states, and the ominous presence of mysterious entities tormenting Johansson and her young son. John Leguizamo is also confirmed to appear as a serial killer, likely the "Father Sunday" figure hinted at in the film’s synopsis, whose past entanglement with Johansson’s character will undoubtedly fuel the escalating dread.

Flanagan, renowned for his masterful storytelling in the horror genre, has assembled a formidable ensemble cast, including frequent collaborators like Rahul Kohli, Hamish Linklater, Carla Gugino, and Samantha Sloyan. The Exorcist: Martyrs marks Flanagan’s return to franchise filmmaking after nearly a decade, his last venture being Doctor Sleep, a critically acclaimed sequel to The Shining. This new chapter arrives after the ill-fated attempt by Morgan Creek Productions and Universal to revitalize The Exorcist with David Gordon Green’s Believer trilogy, which was ultimately scrapped following its underwhelming reception.

Even before securing his star-studded cast, Flanagan expressed immense enthusiasm for his plans, vowing to deliver something entirely novel for the iconic horror series and aiming to craft the scariest film of his career. This ambition was recently echoed by Samantha Sloyan, who lauded Martyrs as the most terrifying project she’s witnessed from the director.
While the trailer judiciously guards many of its narrative secrets, it unequivocally clarifies the thematic direction. The fusion of a detective storyline with a ritualistic serial killer immediately evokes memories of William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist III. However, the distinct visual presentation of the crime scenes in Martyrs, starkly differing from the Gemini Killer’s modus operandi, suggests a standalone narrative, forging its own path within the franchise’s lore.
A particularly intriguing element glimpsed in the trailer are the fleeting shots of cult-like figures, some shrouded in executor-style hoods, actively engaging in violent acts against multiple characters. Should this prove to be a central plot point, it would fulfill Flanagan’s promise of a fresh direction, as no prior film in The Exorcist saga has featured such an organized group. The only other instance of a cult within the franchise was in Fox’s two-season television series, which acted as a legacy sequel before being retconned by Green’s Believer.
The introduction of a cult could also provide significant insight into the film’s provocative title, Martyrs. Both the cult members themselves and the victims at the heart of Johansson’s investigation could be interpreted as sacrifices to a malevolent entity they worship. Whether this entity will be the franchise’s iconic demon Pazuzu remains shrouded in mystery, but regardless, The Exorcist: Martyrs is poised to redefine audience expectations for the series, hitting theaters on March 12, 2027. The film is produced by Jason Blum, David Robinson, and Mike Flanagan, with Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek serving as executive producers.
