Thescreescore – While Apple TV+ currently holds the crown for prestige science fiction with heavyweights like Severance and Silo, those looking for a more diverse cinematic landscape shouldn’t overlook Hulu. The streamer has quietly cultivated a powerhouse library that refuses to be pigeonholed into a single sub-genre. From the existential dread of high-concept thrillers to the anarchic energy of adult animation, Hulu’s 2026 slate proves it is a vital destination for genre enthusiasts.
Here is a curated look at nine essential sci-fi series that demand your attention.
1. The First
A masterclass in grounded storytelling, this co-production between Hulu and Channel 4 eschews flashy laser battles for raw human emotion. Led by Sean Penn, the series explores the psychological weight of a mission to Mars. It is a character study disguised as a space epic, focusing on the sacrifices made by those on the launchpad and those left behind on Earth.

2. Paradise
Dan Fogelman trades his signature family melodrama for something far more sinister in Paradise. The series begins with the deceptive tranquility of suburban life, only to reveal a chilling post-apocalyptic reality hidden within a mountain bunker. As the narrative expands, it evolves from a survival thriller into a profound metaphysical mystery.
3. Solar Opposites
For those who prefer their sci-fi with a side of chaos, Solar Opposites is an absolute riot. Developed by the creative minds behind Rick and Morty, this animated series follows an alien family struggling to blend into Earth’s baffling society. It is irreverent, visually inventive, and perfect for fans of high-concept comedic absurdity.
4. 11.22.63
Stephen King’s legendary prose finds a perfect vessel in this gripping time-travel miniseries. Starring James Franco, the story follows a man tasked with altering the course of history by preventing the JFK assassination. While the temporal mechanics drive the plot, the show’s true strength lies in its immersive period detail and the heavy cost of changing the past.
5. The Orville
What started as a playful nod to Star Trek eventually matured into a profound tribute to the golden age of space exploration. Seth MacFarlane’s series successfully balances sharp wit with genuine ethical inquiry. By its third season, The Orville has fully shed its comedic skin to become a sophisticated exploration of humanity’s future among the stars.
6. Futurama
A titan of the genre, Futurama remains one of the most intellectually stimulating animated comedies ever produced. Following Fry, a man frozen in time and revived a millennium later, the show uses the 31st century to satirize the present. It is a rare gem that can pivot from a hilarious gag to a heartbreaking meditation on loneliness in a single episode.
7. Future Man
If you want to see the concept of time travel pushed to its most ridiculous extreme, Future Man is your go-to. Josh Hutcherson stars as a janitor thrust into a chaotic battle for the future. It is a loud, unhinged, and unapologetically absurd romp through shifting timelines that prioritizes pure comedic joy.
8. Alien: Earth
Noah Hawley brings his signature tension to the Alien franchise with this terrifying expansion of the lore. Bringing the cosmic horror of the Xenomorph to Earth for the first time, the series blends corporate conspiracy with visceral body horror. It is a high-stakes descent into nightmare that is essential for fans of the franchise.
9. Devs
Perhaps the most cerebral entry on this list, Devs is a haunting exploration of determinism and free will. Created by Alex Garland, this miniseries follows a software engineer uncovering the dark secrets of a secretive tech division. It is a visually stunning, mind-bending experience that challenges the very nature of reality itself.
