Thescreescore – Get ready to power up your gadgets because the quirky, critically acclaimed animated film The Mitchells vs. The Machines is officially getting a sequel! Four years after its initial release on Netflix and a nail-biting Oscar race, the streaming giant and Sony have confirmed a follow-up to the beloved family adventure.
The original film, which boasts a stellar 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, charmed audiences with its unique visual style and heartwarming story of a dysfunctional family uniting against a robot apocalypse. According to Variety, Netflix will again distribute the Sony production, continuing their licensing agreement. This differs from their acquisition of KPop Demon Hunters, as Netflix stepped in to release The Mitchells vs. The Machines when a theatrical release was no longer viable due to the pandemic.

While Michael Rianda and Jeff Rowe won’t be returning to direct, Guillermo Martinez, head of story on the first film, will co-direct alongside JP Sans (The Bad Guys 2). The writing team will be helmed by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, also known as the Molyneux sisters, who are crafting the script for Mitchells 2, with production slated to begin early next year.

TheWrap reports that the sequel might be titled The Mitchells vs. the Mitchells, hinting at internal family conflict. However, fans are hoping that advanced technology will still play a significant role, staying true to the first film’s genre-bending spirit.
Interestingly, Netflix and Sony are also in talks for a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, which seems to have a more straightforward path for continuation. However, Mitchells 2 arrives at a time when the animated feature landscape is shifting, with Disney’s dominance in the Best Animated Feature category waning.
With KPop Demon Hunters poised to potentially take home an Oscar this year, the stage is set for a more diverse range of winners. If The Mitchells vs. The Machines 2 can capture the magic of its predecessor, it could very well become a frontrunner during awards season in the coming years.
