While his 1991 comedy Mystery Date initially debuted lower at $1.9 million, adjusting that sum for inflation to roughly $4.7 million reveals The Weight as the lowest wide-release debut for the acclaimed actor when accounting for historical currency values.

This performance is particularly unusual for Hawke, whose filmography boasts a consistent track record. Prior to The Weight, most of his lowest-grossing wide releases date back to the 1990s or early 2000s, with 2013’s Getaway being a rare recent exception. His career has seen numerous titles, including critically acclaimed independent features, find their audience, often with more robust per-screen averages.
Indeed, The Weight‘s theatrical footprint of 1,504 cinemas isn’t exceptionally small; many of Hawke’s past successes, such as Gattaca, Reality Bites, and Alive, achieved higher debuts with fewer screens. Even his minor supporting role in the recent Benoit Blanc mystery, Glass Onion, garnered a remarkable $9.4 million from just 696 theaters. Furthermore, some of his limited releases, like the iconic romance Before Sunrise, demonstrated a stronger proportional performance, suggesting that a wider release doesn’t automatically guarantee success, nor does a moderate one preclude it.
Despite the underwhelming box office numbers, the financial outlook for The Weight isn’t necessarily dire. With a reported production budget of a lean $2 million (marketing costs remain undisclosed), the film’s break-even point is likely set at $5 million or less. This modest expenditure means that even a worldwide gross in the range of $6 million to $10 million could see the picture ultimately turn a profit, demonstrating the resilience of intelligently budgeted productions in a challenging market. While its initial theatrical run may not be a blockbuster success, The Weight could still find its footing and financial viability through subsequent distribution channels.
