Thescreescore – Disney’s Zootopia 2 is off to a phenomenal start, smashing records even before its official weekend debut. The highly anticipated sequel, a follow-up to the 2016 billion-dollar hit, premiered on Wednesday, November 26th, ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, and is already exceeding expectations.
The animated feature has achieved a monumental feat in China, raking in a staggering $34 million on its opening day. According to thescreescore.com, this marks the highest single-day gross for any U.S. animated film in the Chinese market. Moreover, it stands as the best opening day for a U.S. movie in China since F9: The Fast Saga in May 2021, and ranks as the tenth-best U.S. opening day ever in the region.

This impressive performance in China has propelled Zootopia 2‘s international earnings to $41.6 million. With the film currently playing in only 17 international markets, its global box office numbers are poised for substantial growth as it expands to more major territories by the end of the weekend, with the exception of Japan, where it will be released in early December.

As of now, Zootopia 2 has amassed a worldwide total of $80.1 million, securing its position as the 44th highest-grossing film of 2025 globally, even before its first official weekend in theaters.
The success of Zootopia 2 arrives shortly after China celebrated Ne Zha II as the first film to surpass $1 billion in a single territory. Ne Zha II has since become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, with a global total of $1.902 billion, surpassing Inside Out 2‘s $1.699 billion.
While Zootopia 2 may not reach the heights of Ne Zha II, which had a $296.6 million opening weekend in China, its triumph indicates a growing enthusiasm for animated films in the region. Despite China’s recent selectivity regarding U.S. film releases, this could signal positive prospects for future American animated movies.
With upcoming animated titles such as Toy Story 5, Ice Age: Boiling Point, Frozen III, and Shrek 5 on the horizon, it’s possible that Zootopia 2‘s record could be challenged sooner rather than later.
