Thescreescore – The digital frontier is heating up as Tron: Ares, the latest installment in the visually stunning sci-fi franchise, makes a surprising surge at the box office. Despite a somewhat underwhelming opening weekend, the Jared Leto-led film is proving its staying power, leaving some notable films in its digital dust.
According to box office data, Tron: Ares pulled in an additional $1.858 million domestically, pushing its cumulative total to $41.94 million. This impressive feat has propelled it to the 253rd highest-grossing science fiction movie of all time domestically, surpassing a diverse range of films, including Aliens vs. Predator – Requiem, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, The Faculty, and the live-action Ghost in the Shell.

What’s particularly noteworthy is that Tron: Ares managed to outpace two Keanu Reeves sci-fi ventures in a single day. It surpassed The Matrix Resurrections, the legacy sequel that saw Reeves reunite with Carrie-Anne Moss, and Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, the film that launched Reeves into stardom.

The question now is, how far can Tron: Ares climb? Even with a projected drop in its second weekend, the film has the potential to surpass titles like Riddick, Predators, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, RoboCop, and Source Code.
However, the film still faces an uphill battle. With a reported budget of $180 million, Tron: Ares needs to reach an estimated break-even point of $450 million. Whether it can achieve this goal remains to be seen, especially considering that Tron: Legacy, with a stronger opening, only grossed $400.1 million.
As the film continues its run, fans and industry analysts will be closely watching to see if Tron: Ares can truly justify its massive price tag and solidify its place in sci-fi history.
