Thescreescore – In the vast galaxy of Star Wars lore, certain voices resonate with an almost mythical power. None more so, perhaps, than the commanding baritone of James Earl Jones as Darth Vader. So, when Peter Serafinowicz, the original vocal talent behind the menacing Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, recounted director George Lucas’s comparison of him to Jones, his reaction was anything but expected. It was a moment of profound astonishment, tinged with a candid assessment of the realities of Hollywood compensation.
Serafinowicz, whose initial foray into feature films was this pivotal Star Wars prequel, lent his distinctive voice to the visually striking Sith Lord, while Ray Park provided the character’s formidable physical presence. Despite Maul’s iconic design and memorable, albeit brief, screen time, Serafinowicz candidly revealed on the Classic Clown podcast that his experience with The Phantom Menace was, at that juncture, "the biggest disappointment of my life." He expressed a lingering sense of detachment from the character, given the minimal dialogue he was afforded.

The true moment of bewilderment arrived when Lucas himself drew the parallel. Serafinowicz recalled the exchange: "James Earl Jones has got the best voice of any human ever, right? Then, suddenly there I was with George Lucas, and he was saying, ‘Well, Peter, you’re the new James Earl Jones,’ and I was like, ‘Fucking hell, am I? Then why are you paying me such shit money, George?’" This frank retort underscores the actor’s frustration, highlighting the stark contrast between such high praise and the perceived value placed on his contribution.

Unlike James Earl Jones’s enduring, multi-decade legacy as the voice of Darth Vader across numerous films and television series, Serafinowicz’s initial tenure as Maul was fleeting. While he was briefly considered to reprise the role for Solo: A Star Wars Story, his vocal recordings were ultimately unused. The mantle for Maul’s subsequent appearances, notably in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, was passed to Sam Witwer, who has since become synonymous with the character’s voice.
Despite his less-than-stellar experience within the Star Wars universe, Serafinowicz has carved out an impressive and diverse career in the years following The Phantom Menace. His extensive credits span major franchises, including roles in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, John Wick: Chapter 2, and the titular superhero in Prime Video’s The Tick. Furthermore, his versatility continues to be recognized, with a recent announcement confirming his role as Peeves in HBO’s forthcoming Harry Potter television series.
Meanwhile, the character of Darth Maul himself has enjoyed a significant resurgence in the broader Star Wars canon. Despite his apparent demise in The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: The Clone Wars famously revealed his survival with mechanical legs, leading to recurring antagonist roles across both The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, culminating in his final confrontation with Obi-Wan Kenobi. More recently, the animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord premiered on Disney+, exploring his criminal syndicate, with a second season currently in development.
As for Serafinowicz, while his Star Wars chapter may have been brief and bittersweet, his career continues to thrive, showcasing his talent far beyond the confines of a galaxy far, far away. He can currently be seen hosting the Netflix reality game show Million Dollar Secret.
