Thescreescore – Despite filmmaker James Mangold’s recent high-profile deal with Paramount Pictures, the Swamp Thing movie, slated as part of the DC Universe’s Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters," is still very much in development, according to DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn. The confirmation comes amidst concerns that Mangold’s new commitment to Paramount would jeopardize his involvement in the darker, monster-centric corner of the DCU.
In a recent interview, Gunn addressed the speculation directly, assuring fans that the project is not dead. "No, no, it doesn’t. No," Gunn stated emphatically, dismissing the rumors. He further expressed his continued enthusiasm for the film, saying, "Yeah, I mean, yeah, totally. Absolutely." This should come as a relief to fans eager to see Mangold’s vision for the iconic character brought to life.

Gunn also revealed that he and Mangold have been in communication regarding the project. "We’ve talked to him. He’s still invested. So we’ll see. Some things take a long time. We’ll see what happens," Gunn explained, suggesting that while progress may be slow, Mangold remains committed to Swamp Thing. The film joins other DCU projects, such as The Brave and the Bold and the Waller series, that are still in the scripting phase.

While the character has had several live-action versions over the years, including a handful of film adaptations, the latest incarnation headlined his own TV show on the DC Universe streaming service for a single season before being cancelled.
Looking ahead, the DCU’s release schedule is packed, with Lanterns expected in 2026, and Supergirl and Clayface hitting theaters later that year. As with all DCU projects, Swamp Thing’s fate hinges on the completion of a satisfactory script. As of now, no official release date has been set for Mangold’s take on the comic book anti-hero.
