Superman's Tight Spot: Corenswet Reveals the Unexpected Challenges of the Man of Steel Suit

Thescreescore – Recently, David Corenswet, the actor set to don the cape as the new Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming DCU film, offered a candid glimpse behind the scenes, revealing the surprisingly challenging aspects of wearing the iconic Man of Steel suit. His debut alongside Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult this July marks the latest chapter in a long and storied cinematic history of Superman, stretching back to Kirk Alyn in the 1940s and most recently, Henry Cavill. Each iteration has boasted a unique suit—with the notable exception of Tom Welling’s Smallville attire—and each comes with its own set of unexpected hurdles.

In an interview with People, Corenswet divulged the most significant inconvenience: bathroom breaks. "There are lots of zippers," he explained, "but there’s no single zipper that allows me to go to the bathroom, which you would think would be quite straightforward, but nothing is straightforward about these things." The actor revealed that the cost of altering the suit for easier access proved prohibitive.

However, Corenswet emphasized that the experience wasn’t entirely torturous. He praised his dresser, Scotty, describing him as "a mob fixer," for his efficiency in helping him in and out of the suit, allowing for necessary breaks throughout long filming days.

The initial experience, however, was less than stellar. Corenswet described his first time in the suit as "underwhelming," as the costume was incomplete, lacking the iconic S-shield. Furthermore, the suit’s snug fit, tailored to his physique before his intense 40-pound muscle gain, added to the discomfort.

Corenswet’s struggles aren’t unique in the superhero film genre. He acknowledged the common complaints from fellow actors about the restrictive nature of superhero costumes, confessing to experiencing claustrophobia during his first encounter with the suit. The form-fitting design, while highlighting his physique and creating a visually imposing Superman, also contributed to the feeling of confinement. The brighter colors and the return of the iconic trunks, however, soften the overall look, ensuring Superman remains approachable, a detail Corenswet himself emphasized, stating his Clark Kent wouldn’t want to frighten children.

Despite the less-than-ideal initial fitting and the logistical challenges, the final product is undeniably impressive. The new suit, showcased in various teasers, has already ignited considerable fan anticipation for the film’s release next month. The combination of a strong, imposing figure and a more approachable aesthetic promises a fresh take on the iconic superhero. The wait for July 11, 2025, is almost over.
