Thescreescore – Sebastian Stan, a name synonymous with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s beloved Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, is poised to make a significant leap into the DC Studios’ landscape. With his established tenure across fifteen years in the MCU, culminating in his anticipated return for Avengers: Doomsday this autumn, Stan is now venturing into the distinct "Elseworlds" banner of DC, sparking fervent speculation about his long-term involvement.
In a recent conversation with Liam Crowley for Fjord, Stan, whose role in Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated The Batman – Part II remains shrouded in secrecy, was directly questioned about the possibility of securing a multi-picture agreement with DC, mirroring his extensive commitment to Marvel. The inquiry probed whether his enigmatic character might extend beyond the 2028 sequel, offering a canvas for deeper development. Stan’s response was characteristically pragmatic: "I don’t know. Very much like the Marvel experience, it was always one thing at a time. You got to go one experience at a time because you never know how these movies are going to be."

He further elaborated on this cautious approach, stating, "that’s how we always treated the Marvel stuff. Even though there are always plans and amazing ideas, you just have to see when you get there. But I feel very blessed to have been part of another family, so to speak." Stan isn’t the sole MCU veteran joining the Gotham City fray; Scarlett Johansson and Eternals’ Brian Tyree Henry have also been cast in undisclosed capacities for The Batman – Part II.

Whispers and fan theories have vigorously attempted to unmask Stan’s character, with names like Harvey Dent, famously known as Two-Face, and the chilling Victor Zsasz frequently surfacing. As of this writing, DC Studios has only confirmed his participation, leaving the specific role tantalizingly unconfirmed. Similarly, Johansson’s rumored portrayal of Gilda Dent, Harvey’s wife from the comics, remains purely speculative.
While the true identities of these new additions await revelation, production for The Batman – Part II has reportedly experienced a temporary pause. Earlier this week, news broke that director Matt Reeves has stepped away from filming due to personal family matters. DC Studios promptly released a statement affirming their full support for the filmmaker, expressing eagerness to resume the cinematic journey soon.
Beyond the silver screen, The Batman universe has already demonstrated its expansive potential. The critically acclaimed The Penguin spin-off series, developed by Reeves and Lauren LeFranc, saw Colin Farrell reprise his role as Oz Cobb, a testament to the franchise’s successful foray into serialized storytelling. Farrell is set to return for the 2028 film, alongside other familiar faces such as Andy Serkis as Alfred and Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon.
It’s crucial to note that this "Elseworlds" property operates distinctly from James Gunn’s burgeoning DC Universe, which is slated to introduce its own iteration of Batman in The Brave and The Bold. Despite initial considerations to integrate Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader into the main continuity, a decision was ultimately made to maintain their separate narrative threads. However, Matt Reeves’ creative influence isn’t confined to Elseworlds; he is actively involved in the main DCU, producing the forthcoming Clayface film, which will delve into another iconic Gotham City adversary.
As anticipation builds, audiences can catch Fjord in theaters this Friday, October 9, while The Batman – Part II is slated for release on February 14, 2028, promising a thrilling continuation of Reeves’ gritty vision for Gotham.
