Thescreescore – Simu Liu, the charismatic star of Marvel’s "Shang-Chi," recently revealed a surprising and slightly gruesome detail about the night before his now-iconic stock photo shoot: a dog bite to the face. In a recent interview with thescreescore.com’s Ash Crossan, while promoting his new Netflix film "In Your Dreams," Liu recounted the incident, adding a layer of intrigue to the images that helped launch him to stardom.
Before wielding the Ten Rings, Liu was a stock photo model, and those images resurfaced with hilarious fanfare around the release of "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" in 2021. Liu himself embraced the meme, sharing the photos on his social media.

The interview took an unexpected turn when Crossan asked Liu which stock photo he would create for "In Your Dreams." Liu playfully struck a pose reminiscent of one particular photo where he’s seen smiling and waving while dancing. This prompted the actor to reveal the backstory.

According to Liu, he and his girlfriend were visiting a friend who was dog-sitting when a canine squabble erupted. Caught in the crossfire, Liu’s face became the target of a jealous dog, resulting in punctures and significant blood loss. Despite the injury, he persevered with the photo shoot the next day. He jokingly pointed out that if you look closely at the stock photos, you can see scarring on one side of his face, adding a hidden "lore" to the images.
"You want to know something? The night before that stock photo shoot, I got bit by a dog in the face," Liu explained. "I was with my girlfriend at the time, and we were visiting a friend who was dog sitting. There were these two dogs that I didn’t know hated each other. I think I was petting both of them, but I was petting them both on opposite sides of me. I think one of the dogs got jealous of the other and lunged for that dog, but then caught my face in the middle of it. So my entire face got – not ripped open – but there were definitely a couple of punctures and a lot of blood. And I remember being so worried because I had the stock photo shoot the next day. So if you look really closely at a lot of those stock photos – because they’re all done on the same day – you can tell that I have this scarring on the side of my face. There’s lore behind the stock photos."
This revelation adds a new dimension to the stock photos, transforming them from lighthearted internet fodder into a testament to Liu’s dedication and a humorous anecdote about the bumpy road to stardom.
Since those stock photo days, Liu’s career has skyrocketed. Beyond Shang-Chi, he’s graced the screen in "Barbie," "Kim’s Convenience," and lent his voice to "Invincible." His future in the MCU looks bright, with "Shang-Chi 2" in development and a key role in "Avengers: Doomsday" slated for a December 18, 2026 release.
Before his return to the MCU, fans can catch Liu voicing Dad in Netflix’s "In Your Dreams," premiering November 14. The animated film follows two children as they venture into the dream world to save their parents’ marriage.
