Netflix Shocks: WB Movies' Theatrical Fate Hangs in the Balance?

Thescreescore – A seismic shift may be on the horizon for Warner Bros. theatrical releases, as Netflix hints at potential changes following its acquisition of the studio. The streaming giant’s recent announcement has sent ripples through Hollywood, leaving the fate of highly anticipated projects like Dune: Part Three, Mortal Kombat II, and future DC Universe installments uncertain. While Netflix assures that current theatrical plans will remain intact, the long-term strategy for Warner Bros. blockbusters is far from set in stone.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos addressed concerns during a media conference call, stating that "everything that is planned on going to the theaters through Warner Bros. will continue to go to the theaters." However, his carefully chosen words, coupled with the company’s "expectation" to maintain current operations, leave room for interpretation and speculation about the future of theatrical releases under Netflix’s ownership. Sarandos also suggested that theatrical windows will "evolve to be much more consumer friendly, to be able to meet the audience where they are, quicker," hinting at potentially shorter theatrical runs before films hit the streaming platform.

The acquisition, valued at $83 million, is expected to take 12 to 18 months to finalize, giving Netflix control over Warner Bros.’ extensive film library and upcoming projects. While movies with confirmed release dates, such as the untitled DC Studios film slated for March 5, 2027, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova (March 26, 2027), and The Batman – Part II (October 1, 2027), appear safe for now, those still in development face a less certain future.

This news comes as a surprise, especially considering Warner Bros.’ impressive performance at the 2025 box office. The studio became the first to surpass $4 billion globally, driven by a string of successful releases. This success was achieved in part by strong theatrical windows and premium large format screenings.

Netflix has been experimenting with theatrical releases, giving KPop Demon Hunters a limited theatrical run with singalong presentations, resulting in a record-breaking $24.6 million gross. Furthermore, Netflix agreed to give Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Chronicles of Narnia movie an unprecedented IMAX release in November 2026.

The future of Warner Bros. theatrical releases remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Netflix’s acquisition has the potential to reshape the landscape of Hollywood and the way audiences experience movies.
