Katniss Speaks! Lawrence’s Shocking ‘Hunger Games’ Prequel Verdict

Katniss Speaks! Lawrence's Shocking 'Hunger Games' Prequel Verdict

Thescreescore – Jennifer Lawrence, the actress synonymous with Katniss Everdeen, has finally weighed in on The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, two years after its theatrical debut. Her surprising comments came during a lie detector test for Vanity Fair, conducted by her Die My Love co-star, Robert Pattinson.

The interview, which delved into both personal and professional topics, included a segment dedicated to The Hunger Games. Pattinson first expressed surprise that Lawrence had auditioned for Twilight, a role ultimately taken by Kristen Stewart. When asked if she thought The Hunger Games was "cooler" than Twilight, Lawrence surprisingly responded, "No," a statement the polygraph examiner deemed truthful. However, Lawrence hinted that the machine might be faulty, suggesting she may have been deceptive. She later admitted to lying multiple times during the test, without specifying which answers were false.

Despite this ambiguity, her remaining answers seemed more forthright. When Pattinson inquired if she had seen and enjoyed The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Lawrence responded with a simple "Yes" to both questions. While she didn’t elaborate on her feelings, Pattinson ended the Hunger Games segment by asking if her version of "The Hanging Tree" was superior to Rachel Zegler’s. Lawrence quickly conceded, "No, obviously not."

COLLABMEDIANET

Lawrence’s portrayal of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games film series catapulted her to stardom. Even a decade later, Katniss remains one of her most iconic roles. Her brief comments mark the first time Lawrence has publicly shared her thoughts on the prequel since its release in November 2023. Prior to the film’s debut, she had expressed well wishes to Zegler and Tom Blyth, but refrained from offering a formal review until now.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is the first Hunger Games film without Lawrence’s presence, as the story unfolds 64 years before Katniss’s participation in the Games. Despite rumors of a potential cameo, Lawrence did not appear in the prequel.

However, Lawrence’s absence from the Hunger Games universe may be short-lived. Author Suzanne Collins recently released another prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, focusing on Haymitch Abernathy’s 50th Hunger Games. Lionsgate has already confirmed a film adaptation slated for release in November 2026.

Unlike The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Sunrise on the Reaping offers the potential for Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, and Josh Hutcherson to reprise their roles as Katniss, Haymitch, and Peeta, respectively. While Joseph Zada is set to portray a younger Haymitch, the book includes an epilogue featuring an older Haymitch reflecting on his life with Katniss and Peeta. While this scene is pivotal to the book, there has been no confirmation whether any of the original trio will be reprising their roles.

While Hutcherson has expressed interest in returning, both Lawrence and Harrelson have remained silent on the matter since the book’s release. However, in a 2023 interview with Variety, Lawrence stated, "Oh, my God – totally! If Katniss could ever come back into my life, 100 percent." As of now, filming for the Haymitch prequel movie is underway.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled to hit theaters on November 20, 2026.
