Sony Pictures aims to replicate the success of recent adaptations like A Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. According to court documents filed on October 16th, PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash stated that the script for Horizon Zero Dawn is complete. The studio is actively seeking a director, with the goal of commencing filming in 2026 and releasing the film in 2027. The information surfaced amidst a lawsuit filed by Sony against Tencent Games, alleging that their game Light of Motiram is a "slavish clone" of Horizon.
The film adaptation announcement follows Sony’s earlier plans for a Horizon Zero Dawn TV series, which were revealed in 2022. At CES 2024, the company announced that Columbia Pictures would back the film adaptation, following their previous work on PlayStation adaptations Uncharted and Gran Turismo.
