Thescreescore – The sequel to 2023’s surprisingly successful Five Nights at Freddy’s adaptation has just received its MPAA rating, and the result is sending shockwaves through the horror community. Directed once again by Emma Tammi and penned by series creator Scott Cawthon, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 reunites Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, and Piper Rubio as Mike, Vanessa, and Abby, respectively, picking up a year after the events of the first film. The cast is bolstered by some seriously impressive additions: Skeet Ulrich (Scream), McKenna Grace (a scream queen in her own right), Teo Briones (Chucky, Final Destination Bloodlines), Freddy Carter, and even Wayne Knight (Seinfeld), all in undisclosed but undoubtedly juicy roles.
The film, set for a December release, has been slapped with a PG-13 rating for "violent content, terror, and some language." This is a significant development, especially considering the backlash against the first film’s PG-13 rating, which many felt neutered the potential for truly terrifying scares. Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise, previously hinted that Cawthon had addressed fan concerns about the lack of gore in the original. The absence of "bloody images" in this sequel’s rating suggests a surprising shift – perhaps even less violent than its predecessor.

This PG-13 rating is a double-edged sword. While it might disappoint those craving a full-blown, R-rated splatterfest, it’s a shrewd move from a business perspective. The first Five Nights at Freddy’s film raked in a staggering $297 million, becoming the highest-grossing horror film of 2023. Universal and Blumhouse are clearly aiming for similar success with the sequel, and a PG-13 rating significantly broadens the potential audience, maximizing box office potential. Will this calculated decision pay off, or will it leave horror fans feeling shortchanged? Only time will tell. The question remains: can a PG-13 rating deliver the genuine frights fans crave, or will it fall flat? Thescreescore.com will be watching closely.
