Thescreescore – Universal Pictures has unleashed a chilling new trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, offering a deeper dive into the lore and character dynamics ahead of its December 5, 2025, theatrical release. Emma Tammi returns to direct the sequel, set a year after the events of the first film. Abby (Piper Rubio) seeks to reconnect with her animatronic companions, prompting Mike (Josh Hutcherson) to investigate the unsettling origins of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.
The trailer, courtesy of Universal, promises a closer look at the menacing animatronics and the escalating threat facing Mike, Abby, and Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail). The footage opens with Vanessa plagued by nightmares, flashing back to a younger version of herself fleeing from her father, William Afton (Matthew Lillard). This hints at a more profound exploration of Springtrap’s backstory and the events that shaped him.

Lillard’s return as Springtrap is teased, primarily through flashbacks, given his character’s apparent demise in the first installment of Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Adding to the intrigue, Skeet Ulrich, known for his role in Scream, makes his debut in the Five Nights at Freddy’s universe as Henry Emily. As Mike delves deeper into the mystery, he uncovers the truth surrounding his deceased daughter and the disappearances of five other children. Henry, a pivotal yet unseen figure in the original video game franchise, served as a guide to players, offering survival tips via cassette tapes. He was once William’s closest friend and co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment.
Ulrich’s casting marks a Scream reunion with Lillard, who played Ghostface alongside him in the iconic slasher franchise. However, their dynamic in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is expected to be adversarial, with Henry opposing Lillard’s villainous Afton.
The trailer culminates in a terrifying glimpse of the Withered animatronics, a dilapidated set of characters that terrorize the town and Vanessa. These animatronics, the original pre-built versions, were replaced due to their deteriorated condition before a grand reopening.
In a recent interview, Lillard revealed that the sequel’s creative team "learned the first time… and listened to the audience" following the mixed reception of the original film. He suggested that the follow-up would feature more action and jump scares.
The first Five Nights at Freddy’s became Blumhouse’s highest-grossing film, earning $297.1 million despite pandemic-related challenges. The sequel is anticipated to replicate or surpass that success, continuing the studio’s winning streak amidst a generally lackluster year for the box office.
