Thescreescore – A chilling new trailer has just dropped for Ebenezer, offering audiences an extended glimpse into Johnny Depp’s transformative portrayal of one of literature’s most iconic, and notoriously curmudgeonly, figures. Under the visionary direction of Ti West, this upcoming Paramount Pictures release promises a radical reinterpretation of Charles Dickens’ timeless classic, A Christmas Carol, infusing it with a distinct horror sensibility just in time for the holiday season.
Set to hit theaters on November 13, Ebenezer features Depp in the titular role, leading an impressive ensemble cast that includes the likes of Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy, Tramell Tillman, and the legendary Ian McKellen. The recently unveiled footage showcases Depp’s complete immersion into the character, blending his signature physical comedy with a darker, more unsettling edge as he embodies the holiday-hating protagonist. West’s directorial touch is palpable, hinting at a truly terrifying ghost story that expands far beyond the traditional spectral visitations.
The very announcement of Ebenezer‘s development sent ripples through the industry, primarily due to Ti West’s unexpected involvement. Fresh off the critical and commercial success of his X horror trilogy with Mia Goth at A24, West’s pivot to a major studio adaptation, particularly one based on such a revered literary work, marks a significant departure from his usual original storytelling. Furthermore, his decision to steer A Christmas Carol into the horror genre positions Ebenezer as a rare, chilling take on the familiar narrative, standing out even against other darker adaptations like Steven Knight’s miniseries.

Equally noteworthy is this film’s significance for Johnny Depp, marking his first leading role in a major studio production in nearly a decade. Following a tumultuous period characterized by highly publicized legal battles, which notably led to his departure from the Fantastic Beasts franchise, Depp has largely focused on independent art-house projects. Ebenezer signals a powerful return to the mainstream, showcasing his enduring talent on a grander scale.
The new trailer emphatically demonstrates a profound creative synergy between West and Depp. Depp’s performance as Ebenezer Scrooge appears to be an energetic, perhaps even spiritual, successor to his iconic Captain Jack Sparrow, a role he is reportedly in discussions to revisit for future Pirates of the Caribbean installments. West, for his part, seems to have given Depp ample room to explore the character’s eccentricities while simultaneously weaving in his characteristic horror influences. The footage teases a world where Scrooge confronts far more malevolent supernatural entities than just the three Ghosts of Christmas. Eagle-eyed viewers will also spot a clever homage to Depp’s cinematic debut in A Nightmare on Elm Street, with his character being dragged into a bed by an unseen force, hinting at a treasure trove of Easter eggs from both Depp and West’s extensive filmographies awaiting discovery in this fresh adaptation.
With Nathaniel Halpern and Charles Dickens credited for the writing, and Emma Watts leading the producing team alongside executive producers Jason Forman, Stephen Deuters, Adam Bohling, and David Reid, Ebenezer is poised to be a dramatic, yet terrifying, cinematic event. This bold re-imagining promises to redefine a classic, offering a unique blend of dark humor, supernatural dread, and a compelling performance from Johnny Depp that fans have eagerly awaited.
