Thescreescore – The cinematic world has been abuzz with fervent speculation regarding the long-awaited return of Nicolas Cage to the National Treasure franchise. After nearly two decades, fans have clung to every whisper of a third installment, and recent comments from director Jon Turteltaub seemed to ignite a beacon of hope. However, the enigmatic star himself has now stepped forward to offer a definitive, albeit somewhat deflating, clarification on his involvement, adding a layer of intrigue to the saga’s future.
Speaking candidly at the New York Comic Con 2026, Cage addressed the swirling rumors head-on, particularly those stemming from Turteltaub’s earlier assertions. The director had previously suggested that National Treasure 3 was not only moving forward but would indeed feature Cage reprising his iconic role as Benjamin Franklin Gates. Yet, Cage’s recent update paints a less certain picture, revealing that he has not yet formally committed to the adventurous project.
With a characteristic blend of charm and playful exasperation, Cage lightheartedly critiqued the premature announcement. He implied that filmmakers, caught in the excitement of potential developments, sometimes jump the gun when sharing news with an eager public, before all the contractual ink has dried. This playful jab underscored the delicate dance between creative vision and the practicalities of Hollywood production.

The statement that sparked this latest wave of anticipation originated from Turteltaub’s appearance at an event in Philadelphia. There, the director enthusiastically outlined plans for the sequel, confidently including the original star’s participation. According to Cage, however, those pronouncements were, at the time, not entirely accurate, as a concrete agreement for his return to the beloved Disney adventure series had not been finalized.
Despite this candid revelation, devotees of the National Treasure universe should not abandon all hope just yet. While Cage unequivocally stated that he has not yet made a firm decision about revisiting the role of Gates, he conspicuously refrained from entirely dismissing the possibility. This leaves the door tantalizingly ajar, offering a glimmer of potential for both the celebrated actor and the cherished franchise to embark on another treasure-hunting expedition. The journey to National Treasure 3 remains shrouded in mystery, with its most crucial piece – its leading man – still weighing his next move.
