Thescreescore – Timothy Olyphant has offered a tantalizing glimpse into the highly anticipated Netflix film, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, describing it as an extraordinary fusion of the distinct cinematic styles of David Fincher and Quentin Tarantino. The actor, returning to his role from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, suggests audiences are in for a unique blend of auteurial visions when Brad Pitt reprises his Oscar-winning character as a lead for the first time.
Seven years after Quentin Tarantino’s critically acclaimed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood captivated audiences and critics alike, earning two Academy Awards including Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt, the saga of Cliff Booth continues. Pitt steps back into the shoes of the enigmatic stuntman, but this time, the narrative centers squarely on his character. While Tarantino penned the screenplay for this standalone sequel, the directorial reins have been handed to the master of meticulous thrillers, David Fincher, known for his dark aesthetic in films like Gone Girl and Se7en.

Olyphant, who will once again portray real-life actor James Stacy, recently spoke with Comicbook.com, shedding light on how this intriguing collaboration manifests on screen. He characterized the project as a "cool mix," asserting that despite Fincher’s indelible touch, the film remains "a Quentin movie through and through," particularly evident in its signature dialogue. "You hear that dialogue, it’s like hearing a great [Rolling] Stones song, you know, it’s the Stones and like, you know that’s Keith Richards’ two chords," Olyphant remarked, highlighting the unmistakable Tarantino cadence.

However, Fincher’s influence, according to Olyphant, is equally profound. "But then the Fincher brings this… He puts such a stamp on it, the look of it, the feel of it, the music… It’s so clearly a Fincher film," he elaborated. The actor concluded, "And so to see those two things sort of bouncing off each other at once? It’s pretty cool." This suggests a cinematic tapestry woven with Tarantino’s vibrant, dialogue-driven storytelling and Fincher’s precise, atmospheric visual narrative.
Tarantino’s decision not to direct his own script stems from his long-held intention to retire after helming ten films, aiming to conclude his career on a high note without revisiting familiar territory. He explained to The Hollywood Reporter last August that he felt a need for "uncharted territory" for his final directorial effort, despite his affection for the Cliff Booth script.
The stylistic contrast between the two filmmakers is stark yet potentially complementary. Tarantino’s oeuvre is defined by stylized violence, intricate dialogue, a rich tapestry of pop culture references, and often nonlinear narratives. Fincher, conversely, is celebrated for his technical precision, visually dark and controlled aesthetic, and rhythmically paced, psychologically complex storytelling, as exemplified in The Social Network and Fight Club.
It was reportedly Brad Pitt himself who suggested Fincher for the project, building on their successful past collaborations, which include the iconic films Se7en (1995) and Fight Club (1999), among others. The ensemble cast for The Adventures of Cliff Booth is robust, featuring Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis, and Holt McCallany, who reunites with Fincher after their work on Netflix’s Mindhunter. Notably, Leonardo DiCaprio opted not to make a cameo appearance, leaving Pitt and Olyphant as the sole returning stars from the original.
Set eight years after the events of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the film finds Cliff Booth retired from his stunt career and reinvented as a Hollywood "fixer." The narrative promises to delve deeper into his mysterious past, offering new dimensions to the character.
The Adventures of Cliff Booth is slated for an exclusive IMAX release on November 25, 2026, before making its global streaming debut on Netflix a month later, on December 23, 2026. This unique collaboration promises a cinematic event that could redefine the boundaries of a sequel, blending two of Hollywood’s most distinctive voices.
