Guardians Reunited: Brolin & Pace in King's Twisted Game

Thescreescore – The upcoming remake of Stephen King’s "The Running Man" is shaping up to be more than just a thrilling adaptation; it’s a mini-reunion for two stars of Marvel’s "Guardians of the Galaxy." Lee Pace, who plays Evan McCone in the film, recently spoke about his experience working alongside Josh Brolin, revealing some intriguing parallels between their characters’ dynamics in this new project and their roles as Ronan the Accuser and Thanos, respectively.

In an interview with Ash Crossan of thescreescore.com, Pace highlighted the striking similarities between his character’s relationship with Brolin’s Dan Killian in "The Running Man" and the dynamic between Ronan and Thanos in the MCU. Just as Ronan followed the Mad Titan’s orders in "Guardians of the Galaxy," Evan McCone finds himself carrying out the "nasty errands" of Brolin’s character in this new adaptation.

"Twice in a row I’m running nasty errands for Josh Brolin," Pace joked, adding a humorous note about their limited on-set interaction. "The thing is, this is the second movie as well where we have scenes together and we never see each other on set. We film at different times. We only ever meet at premieres and these things. Very funny."

Brolin’s portrayal of Dan Killian, the violent and money-hungry producer of the deadly reality show at the heart of the story, has clearly impressed Pace. "I love what Josh brings to this character," he said. "He brings such a slimy, kind of manipulative energy – he’s just hard to predict what’s truthful. I mean, nothing’s truthful, is the point."

"The Running Man," directed by Edgar Wright, follows Ben Richards (Glen Powell), a desperate man who joins a televised game show where contestants, known as Runners, must survive for 30 days while being hunted by assassins. Pace’s Evan is the leader of these killers, hired by Brolin’s Killian to eliminate the Runners.

Pace also lauded Glen Powell’s dedication to his role as Ben Richards, emphasizing the physical demands of the action-packed film. He praised Powell’s performance, stating that it makes his character someone the audience will root for. "What I love about Glen Powell in this role is that – I mean, what he does, signing up for ‘The Running Man,’ it’s insane. It actually makes no sense. But there’s something about the character that he brings to it – this sense of, ‘I’m going to put myself in the middle of the mess, and I’m going to be fine. I’ll figure out a way out of this impossible scenario.’ So even though the world is hostile and everyone’s trying to kill him, I’m not worried about him. I just kind of want to see him solve the problem."

"The Running Man" is slated to hit theaters on November 14, 2025. With its compelling cast and intriguing premise, this Stephen King adaptation promises to be a thrilling cinematic experience.
