Thescreescore – James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, recently spilled some intriguing tea regarding the highly anticipated Batsuit for the upcoming The Brave and the Bold. Eleven actors have donned the cape and cowl, leaving a legacy of iconic (and sometimes questionable) designs. So, what’s in store for the DC Universe’s newest Dark Knight? According to Gunn, in a chat with CBR, absolutely nothing… yet.
"There’s no decisions made about the costume at all yet," Gunn revealed, echoing his late-stage decision-making process for Superman’s infamous trunks in Superman: Legacy. He confessed a fondness for the classic blue-and-gray suit but emphasized his appreciation for various iterations, highlighting his deep-seated Batman fandom. The conversation even touched upon the surprisingly intense debate surrounding Superman’s briefs, a detail Gunn himself didn’t fully grasp the significance of until he took the reins at DC Studios. He recounted a conversation with Jim Lee, where the artist’s first question was, "What are you going to do about the trunks?" This anecdote perfectly encapsulates the weight of expectation surrounding even the smallest detail of these iconic characters.

The lack of a finalized Batsuit design isn’t surprising. Director Andy Muschietti and DC Studios have a mountain of pre-production work ahead. Even if a specific design were currently favored, the creative process is fluid, and changes are inevitable throughout The Brave and the Bold‘s development. Therefore, the big reveal is likely to be saved for a much later stage – possibly even during filming.

While a modernized, streamlined suit could certainly set this Batman apart from his predecessors (think The Dark Knight and The Batman), the film also presents a golden opportunity to embrace the more comic-accurate, perhaps even slightly more flamboyant, aesthetic. Muschietti’s work on The Flash, showcasing Michael Keaton’s array of comic-book-inspired suits, proves that bolder choices can work on screen. With the DCU already embracing vibrant characters like Krypto, Guy Gardner, and Peacemaker, a classic blue-and-gray suit, complete with those controversial trunks, might just be the perfect homage to the source material. The question remains: will this Batman follow in Superman’s footsteps and sport the iconic undergarments? Only time, and the eventual release of The Brave and the Bold, will tell.
