Thescreescore – The ever-churning rumor mill surrounding the burgeoning DC Universe has once again been addressed directly by co-CEO James Gunn, this time quashing fervent speculation about actor Jensen Ackles joining the franchise. Following a flurry of online activity that saw Ackles follow Gunn on Instagram, fans swiftly interpreted this digital connection as a prelude to a major DCU role, particularly given Ackles’ long-standing association with the Caped Crusader.
The online buzz reached a fever pitch, prompting a direct response from Gunn himself. When a social media user highlighted Ackles’ recent follow, Gunn clarified the situation, stating, "Thanks for letting me know. I’m going to follow him back. I met him once 20 years ago when he was dating a friend of mine. Nice guy. We haven’t cast him as anything." This definitive statement aims to put an end to the immediate rumors, confirming that despite fan hopes, no official casting has occurred.
Jensen Ackles has, for years, been a top contender in fan casting discussions for Batman, specifically for the upcoming The Brave and The Bold film, which will introduce a new iteration of the Dark Knight into the DCU. His prior experience voicing Bruce Wayne in the animated Tomorrowverse has only fueled this desire among the fanbase. Ackles himself has openly expressed his enthusiasm for portraying the iconic hero in live-action on multiple occasions.

This isn’t the first instance where an actor’s social media interaction with Gunn has ignited widespread, albeit unfounded, casting rumors. A notable precedent involved Grant Gustin, known for his portrayal of The Flash in the Arrowverse. When Gustin and Gunn began following each other, many assumed Gustin was set to reprise his role or take on a new version of the Scarlet Speedster in the DCU. Gunn had to personally debunk these claims in August 2023, explaining, "Grant was following me and I like him as an actor so we chatted a bit and I followed him back. Very simple!" As of now, no solo Flash projects have been announced for the new DC Studios slate.
While James Gunn’s recent statement clarifies that Jensen Ackles has not been cast in any DCU project at this time, it doesn’t preclude future possibilities. The popular actor, who is also set to star in Vought Rising, a prequel to The Boys as Soldier Boy, possesses a strong fan following and a proven track record. A significant hero or villain role could still materialize for him down the line.
Ackles has previously commented on the immense pressure and honor of potentially donning the cowl. In July, he playfully addressed the Batman rumors at a Supernatural convention, noting, "I don’t have any news to give you on that front. But hey! [Holds up fingers crossed]." He further elaborated to Collider in June 2025 on the challenge of creating a "truly unique" Batman performance, admitting, "I would be nervous as hell to carry. But also proud. A certain feather in the cap. Anybody who gets to wear the cowl, they got something."
For now, the legions of fans hoping to see Jensen Ackles in the DCU will have to wait patiently for official announcements from James Gunn and Peter Safran, rather than relying on social media breadcrumbs. The future remains unwritten, but for today, the Batman casting speculation involving Ackles has been firmly, yet politely, put to rest.
