Insidious 7: Director Teases Wild New Horizons & Dream Franchises!

Thescreescore – The spectral corridors of The Further may be expanding once again, as Jacob Chase, the visionary behind the latest installment, Insidious: Out of the Further, has weighed in on the chilling prospects for Insidious 7. In an exclusive interview with thescreescore.com, Chase, who previously garnered acclaim for his sleeper hit Come Play, shared his creative insights into the future of the enduring horror franchise, hinting at both a potential return to the Lambert-verse and an intriguing desire to forge his own cinematic nightmares.

Chase not only helmed Insidious: Out of the Further but also co-wrote the screenplay, developing the story alongside The Conjuring Universe alum David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. This new chapter introduces Amelia Eve as Gemma, a single mother discovering a terrifying ability to not only traverse The Further but also to pull its spectral inhabitants into the living world. While Lin Shaye’s iconic Elise Rainier makes a welcome return, the narrative largely centers on this fresh ensemble, charting new, terrifying territory within the established lore.

As Out of the Further prepared for its theatrical debut, Chase expressed a distinct openness to revisiting the Blumhouse-produced series. "I’m certainly very open to making another," he affirmed, praising the experience as "such a good experience" and teasing that "there are more places to take these characters." This suggests a wealth of untapped narrative potential, even as the franchise continues to evolve beyond its initial core cast.

However, Chase also articulated a burgeoning ambition to cultivate his own horror mythology. "I’m very interested in making my own lore for my own franchises," he confessed, though he remained tight-lipped about specific concepts or characters he envisions for a multi-title release. He humbly acknowledged his profound admiration for franchise architects James Wan and Leigh Whannell, stating, "I’ve looked up to James and Leigh for my entire filmmaking career," and expressing a desire to "create my own Insidious." Yet, the director also revealed one other legendary horror series he dreams of contributing to: "I love the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. I love making dream sequences come to life, so that’s something I’ve always thought about."

The Insidious saga has carved out a fascinating, almost paradoxical, trajectory in recent years. What was initially conceived as a definitive conclusion with the Lin Shaye-led The Last Key – a film designed to bridge Elise’s timeline to the original – unexpectedly became the franchise’s highest-grossing entry at the time. This financial triumph prompted Blumhouse to resurrect the series, leading to The Red Door, which, despite feeling like a definitive farewell to the Lambert family, shattered box office records once more. Unsurprisingly, Sony and Blumhouse swiftly greenlit a sixth film, which materialized as Chase’s Insidious: Out of the Further.

Despite a consistent streak of "Rotten" critical scores on Rotten Tomatoes across its 15-year run, the franchise’s commercial appeal remains undeniable. Out of the Further has already demonstrated this resilience, raking in a robust $3 million from its Thursday previews – a figure second only to The Red Door‘s impressive $5 million opening. Should this latest installment continue its strong box office performance, the development of Insidious 7 is all but guaranteed.

The precise direction of Insidious 7, however, remains shrouded in the spectral mists of The Further. While Out of the Further‘s conclusion largely wrapped up Gemma’s immediate storyline, it subtly hinted at new malevolent forces unleashed by Josh and Dalton’s actions in The Red Door, thereby creating avenues for Gemma’s potential return to confront fresh threats.

Alternatively, the seventh Insidious film might not be a direct continuation of any prior narrative thread. The long-gestating spinoff, Thread, first announced in early 2022 with Moon Knight‘s Jeremy Slater attached to write and direct, and Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani slated to star a year later, has remained in development hell. Should Out of the Further‘s success validate the franchise’s capacity for standalone or spin-off narratives, Blumhouse could finally push Thread into production as the next chapter, offering a fresh perspective on the terrifying realm beyond. The future of Insidious is as unpredictable as The Further itself, but one thing is clear: the franchise’s insatiable appetite for box office success continues to fuel its chilling expansion.
