Van Dyke’s apprehension was understandable, given the criticism surrounding his Cockney accent in "Mary Poppins." While the film’s fantastical nature and Van Dyke’s charisma allowed audiences to overlook the accent’s flaws, a similar performance in a serious spy thriller would have been jarring.

Although his performance was not as widely criticized as Van Dyke’s "Mary Poppins" accent, some of his lines were dubbed. Despite the initial mixed reception, "On Her Majesty’s Secret Service" has since been reappraised as a classic Bond film.

Ultimately, Van Dyke’s decision to decline the role may have been a blessing in disguise.
