'The Running Man' Outpaces King's Legacy: Box Office Surprise!

Thescreescore – Edgar Wright’s highly anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s "The Running Man," starring Glen Powell, is making waves at the box office, achieving a milestone that eluded the majority of King’s cinematic adaptations. The film secured the second spot during its opening weekend, coinciding with the release of "Now You See Me: Now You Don’t," with a domestic debut of $16.5 million over three days.

According to data from The Numbers, "The Running Man" has amassed a global gross of $30.4 million by Tuesday, its fifth day in theaters. This figure includes $19.4 million from the domestic market and an additional $11 million from international territories. Surpassing the $30 million mark places the movie among a select group of only 22 Stephen King adaptations to achieve this feat.

Given that approximately 50 Stephen King movies have graced theaters over the years, "The Running Man" has already distinguished itself. However, it faces a significant challenge in recouping its substantial $110 million budget. Typically, big-budget films need to earn approximately 2.5 times their production costs to break even, suggesting that "The Running Man" needs to reach around $275 million to be considered a success. While its final box office performance remains uncertain, it is unlikely to reach this target.

Nevertheless, theatrical revenue is not the sole determinant of a film’s financial success. "The Running Man" will continue its journey toward profitability through streaming releases, video-on-demand platforms, television broadcasts, and physical media sales.

Regardless of its performance against its budget, the 2025 release of "The Running Man" is poised to climb higher on the list of top-grossing Stephen King movies. It is highly probable that it will emerge as the highest-grossing King adaptation of 2025. It marks the fourth theatrical adaptation of King’s work this year, following "The Monkey," "The Life of Chuck," and "The Long Walk."

Currently, "The Running Man" has surpassed "The Life of Chuck" ($11.4 million worldwide) and is rapidly approaching the other two titles. "The Monkey" ($68.9 million worldwide) had a 5-day domestic total of $16.5 million, compared to "The Running Man’s" $19.4 million, while "The Long Walk" ($62.2 million worldwide) had an even lower 5-day total of $14.4 million.

If "The Running Man" maintains its current momentum, it could potentially earn around $84 million by the end of its theatrical run. This would position it as the eighth highest-grossing Stephen King movie of all time, trailing behind titles such as "Secret Window," "Pet Sematary" (2019), "The Dark Tower," "1408," "The Green Mile," "It: Chapter 2," and "It."
